About Sun Damage to Your Skin
Sun damage to your skin can be merely cosmetic and cause your skin to lose its’ youthful appearance, or it can result in a deadly form of skin cancer called melanoma.
Sunlight gives off ultraviolet (UV) radiation which is very damaging to the surface of your skin. Additionally, the UV rays from sun can penetrate deep into the layers of your skin and literally cause changes in the DNA of your skin cells. It’s important to note this UV radiation is also given off by tanning bed bulbs.
The UV radiation from sun exposure is the primary cause of pre-cancerous rough bumps on your skin called actinic keratosis as well as skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and the very dangerous skin cancer known as melanoma.
You can find our page with detailed information about basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma treatments here and actinic keratosis treatments here.
It’s important to note sun damages your skin not only while suntanning or from getting a sunburn, but also on cloudy days or even if you are not outside at all. This is because sun’s rays are very strong and they go through both clouds and glass. Therefore, it is important to protect your skin all of the time.

How Can I Prevent Future Sun Damaged Skin?
To prevent future sun damage, you simply must protect your skin from the sun. Prevention of sun damage has many benefits as follows:
- Reduces the risk of skin cancer
- Reduces the risk of losing your youthful appearance
- Protects your investment in skin care products
- Protects your investment in skin rejuvenation treatments and procedures
It is very important to avoid prolonged sun exposure when the sun is the strongest–generally, 10 am to 4 pm. If you have to be in the sun during that time frame, use a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, wear sunglasses, a wide brimmed hat and sun-protective clothing.
Additionally, you must use a high quality sunscreen of at least 30 SPF every day–even if you are not planning on being in the sun. Make sure the sunscreen you choose has protection against both UVA and UVB sun rays.
