What is Scalp Psoriasis?
Scalp psoriasis is a disease of scalp skin caused by the growth of too many skin cells on areas of the scalp.
What Does Scalp Psoriasis Look Like?
Generally, people with scalp psoriasis have patches of thickish, overgrown skin on their scalp. The patches can be red and very apparent, or hardly apparent at all.
Scalp psoriasis patches may not be limited to areas of the scalp with hair. Sometimes we see the patches creep down onto the skin of the forehead, ears or neck.
People with scalp psoriasis usually notice shiny skin flakes in their hair or on their clothes.
You can lose hair in areas of the scalp with psoriasis, but hair will usually grow back into the bald spots after the psoriasis goes away.
What Does Scalp Psoriasis Feel Like?
People with scalp psoriasis usually have itching. Sometimes there is only slight itching, however the itching can be so extreme that it wakes you up at night.
More severe cases of scalp psoriasis can feel sore and very painful due to cracked skin or bleeding due to scratching. Sometimes people say it feels like burning on their scalp.
What is the Treatment for Scalp Psoriasis?
A variety of non-prescription and prescription shampoos, oils, solutions, and sprays are available to treat scalp psoriasis. Most contain coal tar or cortisone. It’s important you take care to avoid harsh shampooing and try to resist scratching your scalp.
During your appointment, Dr. Strausburg will let you know the treatment for scalp psoriasis that will work best for you.
How Do I Know if I Have Psoriasis On My Scalp?
Dr. Strausburg will take a complete medical history and examine your area(s) of concern. He may be able to tell you you have scalp psoriasis without further testing, however, he will order further tests if there is a question about the diagnosis.
Do You Take Insurance For Patients with Scalp Psoriasis?
