What Is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis (hyper means too much and hidrosis is the medical term for sweating) is a condition in which people have excessive sweating. Normally, your body sweats only to cool itself, but people with hyperhidrosis sweat more than other people do when exposed to the same temperature.
Hyperhidrosis can cause people to have anxiety and some may be embarrassed and lose confidence in themselves. Some people who sweat excessively may even avoid friendships, school, dating, work or other social situations.
What is the Treatment for Hyperhidrosis?
We have treatments available for people who have specific body areas that sweat too much. The treatments we perform are:
- Topical treatments for hyperhidrosis — antiperspirants can be applied to the body area that sweats too much. If drugstore brands do not work, there are prescription antiperspirants that the doctor can prescribe for you.
- BOTOX injections for hyperhidrosis — BOTOX injections prevent sweating because, once injected, the BOTOX medication blocks the nerve supply to the sweat glands. This keeps the sweat glands from producing sweat.
The doctor will let you know the best hyperhidrosis treatment for you during your consultation.
What Causes Hyperhidrosis?
Sometimes we don’t know exactly what causes hyperhidrosis in certain people, but we do know it happens when your sweat glands are over-stimulated by your nervous system. This, in turn, causes a body area to sweat too much. Usually, when a specific body area sweats too much, the cause is unknown.
If your entire body sweats too much, it’s usually due to a problem with your endocrine system, being overweight, menopause or when nerves are damaged.
The doctor only treats hyperhidrosis for specific body parts, so if your enou should let your family doctor know so he/she can let you advise if any further testing is required.
Who Gets Hyperhidrosis?
Anyone can have excessive sweating, but if you have a family member with the problem, you may be more likely to have it. Hyperhidrosis is not seen in one race more than another and it can strike at any age. We often see teenagers with hyperhidrosis.
What Parts of the Body Are Commonly Affected By Hyperhidrosis?
Commonly we see excessive sweating from feet, hands, underarms or face/head. However, some people’s entire body sweats too much.
How Do I Know If I Have Hyperhidrosis?
After a consultation, the doctor can let you know for sure.
However, general symptoms include:
- Your hands sweat so much you can’t always turn a door knob, items sometimes slip from your hands or you are embarrassed about shaking hands with another person
- Your hair or face is wet from sweat when you are not exercising
- Your underarms sweat through your clothing with no exertion
- You find your socks wet with sweat even in normal temperatures
