What is Acne?

Acne is the term for blemishes, clogged or plugged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, pustules, and even deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and even the upper arms.

Who Gets Acne?

Acne affects most teenagers to some extent. However, the disease is not restricted to any age group; adults in their 20s – even into their 40s – can get acne. While acne usually clears up after several years even if untreated, you need not wait to outgrow it.

What are Your Treatments and Procedures for Acne?

To treat your acne, Dr. Strausburg may prescribe topical acne solutions, acne creams, acne lotions or oral medications.

Additionally, we have many procedures that can help control and reduce acne. Please click on each individual link below to go to the page about that specific procedure and get information including pricing, before and after photos and more.

After examining you, Dr. Strausburg will advise which is the best acne treatment for you.

What Causes Acne?

Rising hormone levels in males and females during adolescence (puberty) cause the oil (sebaceous) glands of the skin to get bigger. These glands are found in areas where acne is common (the face, upper back, and chest).

What Does Not Cause Acne?

Acne is not caused by dirt. Acne is not caused by the foods you eat. A tan can mask your acne, but the benefits are temporary.

Home Care for Acne

The following are Dr. Strausburg’s recommendations for his acne patients:

  • Wash your face and other affected areas twice a day with the recommended cleanser. Please note that washing too often may actually make your acne worse.
  • Regular shampooing is also recommended. If your hair is oily, you may want to wash it more often.
  • Men with acne who shave should try both an electric and a safety razor to see which is more comfortable. If you use a safety razor, soften your beard thoroughly with cleanser and warm water before applying shaving cream. To avoid nicking pimples, shave as lightly as possible. Shave only when necessary and always use a sharp blade.
  • Shield your face when applying hairsprays and gels. If the spray comes in contact with your facial skin, it can cause a cosmetic type of acne.
  • Don’t pick, scratch, pop or squeeze pimples yourself. When the pimples are squeezed, more redness, swelling, inflammation and scarring may result.

Do You Take Insurance For Acne Treatment?

Yes, we do take insurance for acne patients seen by Dr. Strausburg, however they may not cover all of our acne treatments and procedures. We suggest you contact your plan administrator to determine if we participate with your insurance plan, make sure they cover acne and ask which acne procedures or treatments they will pay for. Insurance will not pay for non-prescription acne products or treatments they do not feel are medically necessary.
