Wrinkles are not the only enemy of a youthful look. An even skin tone, free of discoloration, is also considered a sign of youthfulness. Unfortunately, many people have dark spots on their face, which keep them from looking their best. These spots are either melasma or simple hyperpigmentation.
Melasma is brown or gray-brown spots on the cheeks, upper lip, nose, forehead or chin and typically appears on both sides of the face. Melasma is caused by hormonal changes due to birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy or pregnancy.
Hyperpigmentation is the result of aging and sun exposure. It will usually appear in smaller patches than Melasma. Hyperpigmentation is sometimes referred to as "liver spots" or "age spots" and can appear anywhere on the body.
