Skin Cancer Is On the Rise

One in five Americans is likely to get skin cancer in his or her lifetime. There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma (the most deadly). The Mayo Clinic recently reported that for women under 40, the percentage of basal cell carcinoma has tripled in the past 30 years, while squamous cell cancer has quadrupled. Malignant melanoma is increasing faster than all other cancers and it is now the No. 1 cancer killer among women ages 20 to 39!

Skin cancer does not affect only those with fair skin. Prolonged sun exposure can cause more than just sunburn. By taking the simple step of wearing a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF every day, you can greatly reduce your risk of developing a basal or squamous cell carcinoma or the much more serious melanoma.

It is not just the sun that is harmful. The use of a tanning bed increases your risk for skin cancer by 20 times!

At Phases Skin Care Center, we have several sunscreens from which you may choose.

  • LindiSkin Spray – for sensitive skin, this SPF 30 spray-on sunscreen is available scented or unscented.
  • SkinCeuticals Sunscreen – available in SPF 20, 30 and 45, this product offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. SkinCeuticals will donate a portion of the sale of all SkinCeuticals sunscreen to The Skin Cancer Foundation through August 31st.
  • Jan Marini Skin Research Daily Face Protectant - This SPF 30 sunscreen is available regular or tinted to give you a little glow.
  • Anthelios SX - This is a daily moisturizing cream with sunscreen. Anthelios SX contains Mexoryl, the first new sunscreen filter approved by the FDA in 18 years. It is non-greasy and fragrance-free. This product has been used in Europe for over a decade and has recently become available for use in the U.S.

You should apply any sunscreen thirty minutes before exposure to the sun and re-apply it at least every two hours. Don’t forget the tops of your ears and back of the neck when applying sunscreen!

You must use sunscreen but if you still want the look of a tan, also use one of our self-tanners or bronzers and get a healthy sun tan glow without the risk of exposure to the sun.

Call 317-848-8101 or stop by Phases today and let one of our aestheticians help you decide which sunscreen is best for you.
