Father's Day Gift Ideas
Father's Day is June 17th. There are many services and products available from Phases, our Turkle & Associates skin care center, that are perfect for the men in your life. Are Injectable Fillers for You?
As we age, our face loses volume and fat. Lines and wrinkles begin to form, especially from the nose to the corners of the mouth and from the mouth to the chin. Sometimes our lips narrow and flatten out. These changes are caused by the sun, gravity, heredity and life style habits. Soft tissue fillers are a non-surgical way to restore fullness to your face, give you a more refreshed and youthful appearance, and give you fuller, plumper lips. Here are brief descriptions of the fillers we offer at Turkle & Associates.
ArteFill is the only non-reabsorbable injectable filler approved by the FDA for the permanent correction of nasolabial folds (the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth). ArteFill visibly corrects the wrinkles and then serves as a scaffold for the development of new collagen by your own body. A skin test is required before treatment.
Cosmoderm/Cosmoplast are fillers made from human collagen. Collagen was one of the first fillers on the market. No skin test is needed. For most people, Cosmoderm or Cosmoplast will last one to three months.
Human Fat, taken from your own body, can be injected to enhance facial fullness, fill deep creases and build up contours. Human fat injections require liposuction of fat from your body prior to the injection. Results are highly variable and repeat injections may be required to create a lasting result.
Hylaform/Hylaform Plus, Juvederm/Juvederm Plus and Restylane are all forms of hyaluronic acid filler. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body so no skin test is required. These fillers will last three to six months for most patients. Some patients see results that last much longer. This seems to be related to the area in which the substances are injected.
Radiance/Radiesse are made of bony mineral paste (hydroxyapatite – used in filling root canals and as radiographic markers). These injections are guaranteed by the manufacturer to last at least one year. These are not recommended for use in the lips.
Each of these injections is performed in our office with either a numbing cream or a dental block (like the ones your dentist uses). With all fillers, there is some immediate swelling and discomfort, which can be treated with ice and Tylenol. For more information, go here.
24-Hour Recovery for Breast Augmentation
Much has been made recently of the 24-hour breast augmentation recovery. In fact, this is nothing new. Many of our patients return to most of their normal activities with 24 hours of surgery and to work within a day or two after surgery.
A 24-hour recovery depends on the patient’s attitude and compliance with directions, the surgeon’s skill, and the patient’s desires. Performing exercises following surgery to relax the tissues, use of the appropriate medication for pain if needed, and surgical technique are all part of the equation.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a week off work if that is what you want to do, but you can just as easily go out to dinner the night of your surgery. In general, Dr. Turkle recommends that her breast augmentation patients get up and about immediately following surgery. She asks that they hold off on cardio activity for about two weeks to avoid bleeding and that the patients avoid heavy lifting, pushing/pulling, or other strenuous upper body activities for the first six weeks.
