Information about board certification for plastic surgeons
Janet K Turkle MD and Stanley J. Harper MD – Board Certified Plastic Surgeons in Indianapolis and Carmel Indiana
When choosing a plastic surgeon, it is very important to investigate their credentials. Dr. Turkle and Dr. Harper are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This is the only plastic surgery board certification that is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties–the organization that regulates board certification for physicians.
Doctors who are members have extensive training in the field of cosmetic, plastic and reconstructive surgery of the entire body. This is important because any doctor, regardless of training, can perform cosmetic surgery – there are no restrictions or laws against this.
According to the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a plastic surgeon that is board certified:
- has completed at least five years of surgical residency training after medical school, including at least two years in plastic surgery
- has passed comprehensive cosmetic and reconstructive surgery exams
- is qualified to perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures – everything from liposuction and facelifts to intricate wound repair.
Additionally these doctors are required by the Board to complete a rigorous recertification process to assure they are providing the highest level of patient care. Physicians who perform cosmetic surgery without being certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery are held to none of these standards.
Keep in mind that many doctors say they are “board certified”, but in actuality the board is not plastic surgery, or it is a non-recognized board. If you have any questions about the authenticity of board certification for plastic surgeons, please visit www.plasticsurgery.org.
